Italian tax code calculator (codice fiscale)
Free, no registration. The calculation runs in the browser: the data entered is never sent or stored. The result follows the official algorithm but is not an official assignment.
Calculator
Calculated, not assigned. The result applies the official algorithm to the data entered. Because of homocody (two people generating the same code) or a different transliteration in the Italian records, the code assigned by the Agenzia delle Entrate may differ. Only the official code, shown on the certificate or on the health card, is valid for contracts and public bodies. The official verification service confirms whether a code exists.
What the codice fiscale is
The codice fiscale is the Italian tax identification code for individuals: sixteen characters derived from surname, first name, sex, date and place of birth, according to Ministerial Decree 23 December 1976. It is required for almost every formal act in Italy: employment contracts, bank accounts, rental agreements, university enrolment, property purchases, registration with the national health service, opening a VAT number (partita IVA). It is issued free of charge by the Agenzia delle Entrate.
How the code is built
| Positions | Content | Rule |
|---|---|---|
| 1-3 | Surname | First three consonants; vowels are added if consonants are fewer than three; X fills any remaining position. |
| 4-6 | First name | Same rule, except that with four or more consonants the first, third and fourth are used. |
| 7-8 | Year | Last two digits of the year of birth. |
| 9 | Month | A letter: A January, B February, C March, D April, E May, H June, L July, M August, P September, R October, S November, T December. |
| 10-11 | Day and sex | Day of birth; 40 is added for women (01 → 41). |
| 12-15 | Place | Cadastral code of the Italian municipality, or the code of the foreign country (Z followed by three digits: United Kingdom Z114, United States Z404, Germany Z112). |
| 16 | Check character | A letter computed from the previous fifteen characters. |
Born abroad
For people born outside Italy the place is the country, not the city. As a rule the country is the state that existed at the date of birth (Yugoslavia, Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia), each with its own code: after the date is entered, the field lists the countries in force at that time. Names in non-Latin alphabets are coded from the transliteration used on the document presented in Italy; a different transliteration produces a different code, which is the most common reason a calculated code does not match the official one.
Frequently asked questions
Is the calculated code valid for official use?
No. Only the code assigned by the Agenzia delle Entrate is valid. The calculator is useful to check a code, fill in a form while waiting for the certificate, or spot a typing error.
How is the official code obtained?
Through an Italian consulate abroad, an office of the Agenzia delle Entrate in Italy, or, for non-EU nationals entering with a visa, the immigration one-stop desk (Sportello Unico) or the Questura. Details on the dedicated page.
Is the data stored?
No. The calculation runs entirely in the browser; nothing is sent to the server. See the privacy notice (Italian).
